LET US LEARN ABOUT THE SYNTAX
इंग्लिश भाषा के grammar में syntax की अहम भूमिका होती है। यह शब्दों और वाक्यों का अरैन्जमेंट कहलाता है। इसके अंतर्गत वर्ड ऑर्डर और सब्जेक्ट-वर्ब-एग्रीमन्ट को शामिल किया जाता है।
Agreement: Subject and Verb
Agreement between subject and verb of a sentence is a must. According to this rule, the number/person of the verb must be the same as that of subject of the sentence. That is why we use singular verb with the singular subject and plural verb with the plural subject.
She sings, Mohan writes. Aditi reads a book. He goes to school.
The subjects of these sentences are singular and so with them singular verbs (sings, writes, reads, goes) have been used.
Look at these sentences-
Girls dance. They quarrel. Boys play. We read the English newspapers.
Here the subjects of the sentences (girls, they, boys and we) are plural and so plural verbs (dance, quarrel, play, read) have been used with them.
Now look at these sentences-
They goes to school in the morning.
He write fast
Sita write a novel.
Boys plays cricket match in the evening.
All the above four sentences are incorrect because the subject – verb agreement rule has not been followed in them. They is a plural subject and with it singular verb goes has been used. Other sentences have the same problem. With singular subject he plural verb write has used. In the third sentence, with singular subject Sita, plural verb write has been used. Boys make plural subject but with it singular verb plays has been used. So all the four sentences have the errors of syntax.
